What does MUTCD stand for?
The Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices is a manual that was written in 1935 to standardize road signage and make it uniform from state to state. Signage evolved through a combination of experiment, testing and much research. Through the year’s traffic sign sizes have changed, signs have been added, new reflective technologies have made signs much brighter and last longer. To learn more checkout the MUTCD website.
How long will my traffic sign last?
The lifespan of your sign depends on the type of reflective sheeting that is used:
- Engineer Grade Signs 7 years BRIGHT
- High Intensity Prismatic Signs 10 years BRIGHTER
- Diamond Grade Cubed signs 12 years BRIGHTEST
If you buy a STOP sign today for $40.00 and it last you 10 years, you are going to only pay .01 per day for a traffic sign that works for you 24/7 – 365! That’s a pretty inexpensive investment in a product that will save lives!
How deep should I pound my sign post?
Sign posts should be pounded 18” to 42” into the ground depending on the length of post, soil conditions, and how deep the frost line is in your area. Since burial guidelines vary from state to state we recommend reaching out to your local road department for more information.
What type of Reflective Sheeting do you use?
Dornbos Sign & Safety has been using 3M Matched Component Products for over 50 years. We’ve had very little problems over the years with any of 3M’s reflective products. Each year we produce tens of thousands of signs and rarely do we have a problem because of a 3M quality issue.
What grade aluminum do you use?
.080 5052 –H38 is specified and used by Dornbos Sign & Safety Inc. for all MUTCD state spec signs.
When should I use 3M Diamond Grade Cubed Signs?
Local and state road agencies use 3M Diamond Grade Cubed Reflective sheeting when the MUTCD calls for it. Certain signs in the MUTCD and on certain signs and/or road projects might specifically call-out 3M Diamond Grade Cubed Reflective Sheeting.
FLOURESCENT YELLOW –GREEN TYPE XI is used for pedestrian and school crossings, school buses and building evacuation signs.
FLOURESCENT YELLOW is used for pedestrian crossing, bicycle, playground and other signs that you want to stand out and last the extra couple of years.
FLOURESCENT ORANGE is used for Temporary Work Zone signs to help protect road workers in construction work zone areas.
ROAD WORK AHEAD, RIGHT LANE CLOSED AHEAD, etc.
All in all, Diamond Grade Cubed signs are the brightest and most durable traffic signs on the market!
What is the difference between FLAT & EXTRUDED STREET SIGN?
FLAT street signs are made of our regular MUTCD compliant signs stock and are .080 thick 5052-H38 aluminum.
EXTRUDED street sign blanks have a thick ridge on the top and bottom of the sign blade and measures .090 thick between the ridges.
What liability do I have if my sign is fading and no longer reflective?
If your parking lot or road is “Open to Public Travel” your signs must follow the MUTCD standards for reflectivity. Roads that are built or maintained privately may not need to follow these guidelines. Installing the proper reflective signs is the best way to protect yourself from legal action.
