Property Signs
Dornbos Sign & Safety makes no trespassing signs, no hunting signs, private road signs, and video surveillance signs for landowners, farms, hunting land, private roads, HOAs, and commercial properties.
Every property sign is made in the USA in Charlotte, Michigan, on .080-gauge aluminum with 3M reflective sheeting, and stock signs ship nationwide in 2–10 business days.
No Trespassing, No Hunting & Private Property Signs
Everything landowners ask before posting their property: which sign to use, when to post for deer season, how many signs you need, and how to keep them up.
What is the difference between a No Hunting sign and a No Trespassing sign?
A No Hunting sign prohibits hunting only. A No Trespassing sign prohibits all entry without the owner's permission. A No Hunting sign can be read as permission to hike, fish, ride ATVs, or cut through, so landowners who want everyone off the property should post No Trespassing signs, or both signs together.
No Hunting Sign vs. No Trespassing Sign at a Glance
| Factor | No Hunting sign | No Trespassing sign |
|---|---|---|
| What it prohibits | Hunting only | All entry without permission |
| Best for | Land open to hikers or neighbors but closed to hunting | Land closed to everyone |
| Common locations | Field edges, woodlots, leased hunting ground | Gates, driveways, two-tracks, trailheads |
| Dornbos product | No Hunting Sign, 12" x 18" | No Trespassing Private Property, 12" x 6" |
If you want one sign that says both, order a custom sign reading "No Hunting or Trespassing," with your name and phone number added.
When should I post no trespassing signs for deer season?
Post no trespassing signs for deer season before archery season opens, usually in early fall, and no later than two weeks before the firearm deer opener, in November in most states. Most trespass on rural land happens during hunting season.
In most states, posted signs are the legal notice that makes trespass enforceable. Order by mid-October to get stock signs up before a November opener.
Which property sign to use?
- Driveway or road entrance: Private Property No Trespassing Violators Will Be Prosecuted. A red octagon in 18", 24", 30" and 36" sizes, large enough to read from a moving vehicle.
- Gates, fence lines and trailheads: No Trespassing Private Property, a compact 12" x 6" sign that mounts on a fence post or gate.
- Woodlots, field edges and leased hunting land: No Hunting sign, 12" x 18".
- Private roads and long driveways: No Trespassing Private Drive, Private Road Residents Only, Private Drive No Turnaround and Private Road Dead End No Turn Around. These stop delivery drivers and GPS traffic from treating a private road as a through street.
- Where a public trail crosses private land: Entering Private Property Stay on Trail.
- Field access roads and pull-offs: No Dumping Violators Will Be Prosecuted.
- Parking lots and frontage: No Parking Private Property.
- Barns, cabins, equipment yards and trail-camera sites: No Trespassing This Property Is Protected by Video Surveillance.
How many no trespassing signs do I need, and how far apart?
How many signs you need depends on what US state you are located in. Posting laws set the minimum sign size, letter height, spacing, and sometimes the wording. A practical rule: post a sign at every gate, driveway, two-track, trailhead, and field entrance, then add signs along the boundary so the next sign is always in sight.
State examples
- Michigan: posting signs must be at least 50 square inches with letters at 1 inch tall or higher, spaced so at least one sign at any point of entry is in sight (MCL 324.73102).
- Minnesota: signs must have letters at least 2 inches tall and the name and phone number or signature of the owner, posted at intervals of 1,000 feet or less (500 feet in wooded areas), or at the primary corners of each parcel and at access points.

Why are aluminum no trespassing signs better than posting tags?
Aluminum signs last for years; thin posting tags often last a season. Low-cost posting tags are plastic or thin-gauge aluminum that fade, tear, and blow down.
Dornbos property signs are .080-gauge traffic-grade aluminum, the same material used for road signs, so they don't rust or bend in the wind. The 3M reflective sheeting lights up in a headlamp or flashlight, so the sign is still readable when hunters walk in before dawn or out after dark. Learn how reflective sheeting works.

How do I mount property signs so they don't get stolen?
Mount property signs on sign posts with a sign hardware kit. Use vandal-resistant aluminum breakaway nuts, whose heads snap off when tightened so they can't be removed with a wrench.
Add sign saver backing plates to keep the bolts from pulling through the sign. In remote areas where signs get spray-painted, choose the 3M protective overlay film at checkout so paint wipes off.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. A No Hunting sign prohibits only hunting. To keep everyone off your land, post No Trespassing signs or post both.
Posted land is property that has signs (or, in some states, purple paint marks) at its boundaries telling the public that entry, hunting, fishing or trapping is prohibited without permission. In many states, entering posted land without permission is trespass even when the land isn't fenced.
It depends on the state. Michigan requires at least 50 square inches with 1-inch letters. The Dornbos 12" x 6" No Trespassing Private Property sign is 72 square inches, and the 12" x 18" No Hunting sign is 216 square inches.
In Michigan, the landowner, the lessee, or their agent may post the property. Anyone else needs written permission from one of them (MCL 324.73105). Other states have similar rules, so check before posting on land you don't own.
Some states require it. Minnesota, for example, requires the owner's or lessee's name and phone number or signature. A custom sign can include your name and phone number.
