How Often Should Street Signs Be Replaced?

While all of the products offered at Dornbos Sign & Safety are built to last, there may be situations where it is necessary to replace street signs, signposts or sign hardware. While some instances of sign replacement may be immediately apparent due to the condition of the sign or signpost, other situations may not be as evident.

Common Reasons Why Signs Need to be Replaced

There are a variety of reasons why replacing street signs may be necessary, a few of which we’ve included below:

  • Physical damage due to impact from a vehicle or another strong force. Many times street signs need to be replaced due to physical damage from a vehicle or some other form of impact. During severe storms, for instance, strong winds can sometimes blow street signs to the ground. Heavy storms can also damage trees, which in turn, can often damage signs, too.
  • Issues with reflective film. Signs may not always need to be replaced due to severe damage. In fact, another common instance where signs may need to be replaced occurs when a sign’s reflective coating has diminished. Losing this reflective coating results in the sign being hard to see at night, or even during bright sunny days, due to the lack of contrast in the sign’s coloring.

At Dornbos Sign & Safety we offer a variety of grades of reflective materials you can choose from to fit your needs. If you’re looking for more information about the benefits of each grade of reflective sheeting, reach out to our team of knowledgeable customer service members to assist you.

How to Prevent Repeated Damage to Street Signs

Depending on a sign’s location, it may be placed in a spot that is prone to regularly being hit by passing vehicles. Rather than simply replacing the sign each time it’s hit, we recommend the Signpost Saver. With a Signpost Saver, when a sign is hit or run over, a support pin at the base of the sign breaks away, allowing you to pick the sign up and put it back in place with an inexpensive pin that costs about $7, as opposed to spending several hundred dollars to replace the entire street sign.

Signs are also often damaged due to graffiti. Rather than replace these street signs, we recommend a protective overlay film that is simple to apply, and works to prolong the life of your signs. After being applied, these overlay film products allow you to simply wash off graffiti and other stains using graffiti remover or other paint cleaning products.
